What is the typical format of the event?
  • Photography campaigns typically have one Call To Action (Upload Photos about X topic), but will frequently have local “contributing” campaigns that are organized by Wikimedia Affiliates that might include local photo walks and other in-person events or trainings.
How long do the campaigns last?
  • Most Photography campaigns last for 1-2 months in order to give time for photographers to identify and upload photos.
How do the organizers target the audience? Photographers are targeted in two ways:
  • International Central Notice Banners are run on Wikipedias for readers and editors
  • Local communities reach out to photographer communities in their own context

What is the typical impact of these events?

  • Content gaps Photos are upload of previously not photographed content
  • Contributor gaps Photographers and new event organizers are easy to recruit through the campaign.
  • Reader gaps - in theory, photographs improve reader usage of Wikipedia. But in practice organizers struggle to get images well used after campaigns.
Challenges
  • Organizers sometimes have challenges getting photographs used by the Wikimedia communities after the campaign. A separate campaign is sometimes needed to encourage contributions.
  • Newcomers sometimes have trouble interpreting copyright or other requirements for quality images.
