What is the typical format of the event?  Typically writing contests are very centralized: one contest, with one place for submissions.
How long do the campaigns last?  At least 2-3 weeks, typically a month.
How do the organizers target the audience? Organizers target experienced users, typically with central notice or community notifications.

What is the typical impact of these events?

Content gaps -- Lots of new content can be created, especially if the focus is on translation between languages.

Contributor gaps - Typically writing contests only increase participation of experienced users. However, it can focus these experienced users on topics not well covered in certain languages.

Reader gaps - organizers can focus smaller-language contributors on high impact topics that are missing and have high potential for readership.
Challenges Writing contests are hard to make inclusive for new editors, and rarely are successful for including editors without extensive skills.
