content | "
Not all campaigns are focused on newcomers or people who are participating in the movement. In fact, there are several important types of audience that you could engage from within the Wikimedia movement.

Wikimedia Affiliates

Most campaigns have a decentralized event model to help affiliates participate. For example, Wiki Loves Africa or Art+Feminism focus on helping local community groups in the Wikimedia Movement run local events. In both of those campaigns, the format of the event is very structured, and there is a training kit for local organizers.

Local events can vary widely, and as part of the #WikiForHumanRights campaign we have been focused on helping local communities find their own event format: sometimes editathons or newcomer trainings, sometimes on-wiki writing contests, etc.

The Geographic distribution of Wikimedia affiliates per the documentation on Meta.

Experienced editors

For most writing contests in the Wikimedia Movement, experienced editors are the target audience for participating in the campaign. If your goal is volume of content or translation, experienced editors tend to be the best contributors. Take for example, the Months of African Cinema Campaign: because they focus on experienced editors, they create a lot of new articles about African Cinema.

Most campaigns involved experienced editors in other ways as well: for example, patrolling or reviewing contributions by newcomers; judging or reviewing photography; or helping mentor newcomers when they arrive on the wikis.

The motivations for experienced editors tend to be more focused on quality of contributions and on expanding content in their own language or home wiki. Prizes are sometimes helpful for incentivizing participation in these events (though the results can be mixed).
" |
