The SDGS are structured around 17 high level goals that are meant to support each other in achieving a better vision for the future. Each goal has a clear public message, a series of metrics, and responsible agencies within the UN system for tracking and coordinating action on those goals.

Like other UN system goals, these are aspirations designed to instigate conversations between UN member states and other implementing parties, such as businesses, development organizations and other non governmental organizations.

For example, Sustainable Development Goal 15 has the following elements:

  • Public headline “Life on land”
  • Mission statement: “Protect, restore and promote sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems, sustainably manage forests, combat desertification, and halt and reverse land degradation and halt biodiversity loss”
  • Nine targets, with areas of focus such as deforestation, land degradation and urban sprawl. For each of these targets there are several measures.
  • Custodian agencies for each of the 9 targets, a UN Agency is responsible for tracking and encouraging progress.
