The IPCC's scientific process, of reviewing academic literature in a broad a scientific process, that is then reviewed and the final summary of the work is approved by polititions. This combined process of many years of writing and review, and the political process means that the science tends to be more conservative, and may be out of date by the time that it's published. The IPCC is a good source for concensus science, but may represent all of the newest science.
