Welcome to the end of Unit 1!

This is the first assignment for the course. To complete the assignment we want you to start exploring a topic for impact in your context. We recommend focusing on one of the themes related to the course: climate change or gender.

  1. Find both a) a recent piece of news coverage about climate change or gender inequality in your context and b) a recent research report about the same issue in your country by either a government agency, non profit or academic institution. For each of these sources:
      • Share the link to each of those sources in the forum.
      • Based on what you read:
        • What topics around gender or climate change do you think will be most important for your country or community? How do you know?
        • Were you surprised by any of the information you found? Why?
      • Identify at least 3 Wikipedia articles or Wikidata items that could be edited based on those sources. Share a link to those articles, and explain two things based on what you learned in this unit:
        • Why would these articles be impactful to improve for readers from your context?
        • How do you think sharing that knowledge would increase the relevance of Wikipedia in your context?
      • Bonus: If you have time, make a few small edits expanding the Wikipedia pages in your language.
  2. Read the response to the above question by one of your classmates from a different country or context, and respond to their post in the forum:
      • How is what they identified as important similar to what you would expect the public to be concerned about in your context? How is it different?
      • Do you think editing about that topic could be important for your Wikipedia or Wikimedia project? Why or why not?
Rubric   This assignment is due by the end of Wednesday, October 11.
  • Completion of this assignment includes:
      • Bringing two sources and three Wikipedia articles or Wikidata items to the forum
      • Describing a theory of impact for the topic in your context
      • Responding to other participants in the course
