As we learned in the last unit, defining and shaping “Topics for Impact” can be complicated. Not only are there potentially 1000s of different types of knowledge gaps, but also knowing that they will have an impact (that someone will need the information, and use it on Wikimedia projects) can be challenging. Once you have identified a knowledge gap-- it is important to identify what kinds of frameworks there are in the world for that topic area, so you can identify where to start filling that gap. This Unit has two big sections in WikiLearn


The first section has two parts: in the first part , we are going to introduce some international and multi-context knowledge frameworks around the broad concept of sustainability as a way to find knowledge gaps on Wikimedia project, and then in Part 2 we are going to offer you two separate sub-units: one focused on Gender and one focused on Climate change. In these sub-units, we will examine these broad global themes, and describe how local communicators, activists and knowledge builders might focus on different approaches to those topics.


The second section also has two parts. We hear from organizers that often it's hard to develop a list of impactful, focused topics for participants to contribute to during events or campaigns. In part 3 of this Unit, we will describe what tools we have to gather the wiki pages in a topic area within the Wikimedia Movement to form a Topic List and in Part 4 we are going to show you how to use some of the most impactful tools for these activities. 


By the end of this Unit, we want you to feel empowered in identifying knowledge frameworks around Sustainability and your area of focus (Gender or Climate), the various ways you might use knowledge frameworks to develop a project to fill a knowledge gap, and the tools on Wikimedia projects for building lists within those gaps. You will demonstrate this knowledge by building a topic list using one of these tools in the final assignment.
