content	"<p><strong>Look to the References: Citing Women and including Feminist or other Gender Inclusive perspectives</strong></p> <p>Like other Gender Gaps on Wikipedia, a 2023 <a href="https://asistdl.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/asi.24723" target="[object Object]">study </a>prevalence of women in citations is very low. Both people from non-Anglosphere countries and Women are cited far less than you would expect based on their prevalence in the literature. This replicates biases found in existing scholarly literature that affects the careers of women scientists and scholars from the global south.  </p> <p>At the same time, <a href="https://scholarlykitchen.sspnet.org/2022/11/01/guest-post-wikipedias-citations-are-influencing-scholars-and-publishers/" target="[object Object]">in this blog post</a>, Wikipedian in Residence Rachel Helps outlines how citations on Wikipedia can have ripple effects across the scholarship and internet; creating further citation and further awareness about the work of women. What could we do to address the citation gap and cite more women? </p> <p>From a knowledge ecosystem perspective, adding citations to women authors and to fields or academic sources that promote feminism or gender inclusive perspectives provides a foundation for further research on these topics. Additionally, a citation from a woman academic can help advance their careers, making it more likely they will be cited and improving academic recognition by improving academic impact metrics like <a href="https://www.altmetric.com/" target="[object Object]">AltMetrics</a>.</p> <p>Furthermore, as <a href="https://artandfeminism.org/resources/research/unreliable-guidelines/" target="[object Object]">Art+Feminism Unreliable Guidelines</a> highlights in the research, creating a more inclusive citation practice across reliable sources requires more active, informed conversations about sourcing. Modeling the use of reliable sources with a feminist perspective, and creating editing interventions that create space for literature representing women can greatly strengthen the case for changes on the wikis.</p> <p></p>"
