Some of you might be asking -- wait a minute, I chose this course because you are highlighting Gender or Climate Change as a topic: Why am I reading a section about sustainability?\u00a0
\n
Sustainability is about balancing economic viability of human livelihoods, the quality of societies systems of support, and an environment that thrives. The ultimate goal of sustainability is creating a world where future generations can also enjoy prosperity and well being. A prosperous, equitable future includes both humans and nature in balance.
\n
Sustainability and related concepts like \u201cgreen\u201d, are concepts that have sometimes been co-opted by business or certain fields of economics to imply simply \u201cit is possible to maintain\u201d the current way of doing things indefinitely (i.e. this business model is sustainable, because we can do it for 20 years).\u00a0
\n
However, to build a future where humans and nature are in balance, requires creating a vision of the future that includes a fair and equitable treatment of all people -- women, children, and marginalized communities of all types must be in the center of a sustainable future. The looming threat of climate change and other related environmental crises, compounds a number of historical inequalities, such as barriers to access to education and property by women, or the historical economic isolation of indigenous or Afro-descent communities.\u00a0 This means that in our current world, Sustainability is one of the\u00a0broad reaching topics that we could explore.
\n
Additionally on the next page we will explain a more practical reason why Sustainability is a powerful framework for the context of Wikimedia.\u00a0
\n
<img height=\"562\" width=\"1000\" src=\"/static/Village_Children_-_natural-_bangladeshi.jpg\" alt=\"Photo of children walking through eroded farmland in northern Bangladesh.
