<h3>Neutral Point of View (NPOV) policy</h3>
<p>You have probably encountered a moment where edits from someone in your community were removed from Wikipedia because of a lack of neutrality. Wikipedia’ <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Neutral_point_of_view" target="[object Object]">Neutral Point of View (NPOV) policy</a>, frequently gets interpreted as “Wikipedia should not have information that everyone can’t agree on”. However, both the Wikimedia movement’s focus on “The Sum of All Human Knowledge in every language” and the movement strategy focus on Knowledge Equity mean that we aren’t, strictly speaking, neutral.</p>
<p>We are seeking to create knowledge that is useful, impactful and changes the status quo of the world we are in. Therefore, what do we actually mean by Neutral Point of View?</p>
<p>In practice most Wikimedia communities have addressed the “NPOV” tension by focusing on two policies: <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Verifiability" target="[object Object]">Verifiability</a> (every statement must have a reference) and providing <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Neutral_point_of_view#Due_and_undue_weight" target="[object Object]">Due Weight </a>(balance of opinions, based on the proportion of experts with opinions about the topic). By balancing all of the different opinions that can be referenced with reliable sources, we create a survey of the different types of expertise on a topic.</p>
<p>When we organize for Topics for Impact we have to identify ways to organize people to contribute in a way that navigates between a clear perspective (that information on this particular “Topic for Impact” matters and can be transformative) and the various norms within Wikimedia communities. Taking this approach of both meeting the Wikimedia community where it is at, and representing the needs of these knowledge areas can be challenging for some participants who want to change the world.</p>
