<p style="padding-left: 30px; padding-right: 30px;">With some scientific topics, there will be no problems including them on Wikimedia projects. The relevant expert knowledge might be uncontroversial: for example, most people agree on the best sources of information for most medical topics.</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px; padding-right: 30px;">However, for some other global issues, there can be a tension between the “status quo” and the expert knowledge developed to address the topic. For example, in <a href="https://www.canva.com/link?target=https%3A%2F%2Fen.wikipedia.org%2Fwiki%2FPoverty_reduction&design=DAFOVHfj0yE&accessRole=viewer&linkSource=document" target="[object Object]">poverty reduction</a>, most experts will communicate that poverty is connected to core problems with global economies, such as <a href="https://www.canva.com/link?target=https%3A%2F%2Fen.wikipedia.org%2Fwiki%2FCapitalism&design=DAFOVHfj0yE&accessRole=viewer&linkSource=document" target="[object Object]">capitalism</a>, <a href="https://www.canva.com/link?target=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.tandfonline.com%2Fdoi%2Ffull%2F10.1080%2F07036337.2021.1902318&design=DAFOVHfj0yE&accessRole=viewer&linkSource=document" target="[object Object]">neo-colonial trade relationships</a>, and <a href="https://www.canva.com/link?target=https%3A%2F%2Fen.wikipedia.org%2Fwiki%2FInternational_inequality&design=DAFOVHfj0yE&accessRole=viewer&linkSource=document" target="[object Object]">histories of inequality</a>.</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px; padding-right: 30px;">For some editors on the wikis, this might be seen as non-neutral because it challenges conventional wisdom or politics. But as we will examine in this course, this knowledge is often verifiable and needs to be included in the wiki for due weight. Organizing to support inclusion of these perspectives, sometimes triggers resistance by those whose worldviews are challenged. </p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px; padding-right: 30px;">We know that this kind of resistance is particularly common in one of the themes in this course: the Gender Gap. Since first identified in the early 2010s, organizers and editors writing about women and writing women's perspectives into Wikipedia content have been argued with consistently about the relevance of that content to Wikipedia. However, as we will discuss in Unit 2, there is a very robust body of knowledge to add to Wikimedia projects.</p>
