The African content gap reflects many of the challenges we face in understanding impact-organizing as a movement.</p> <p style="padding-left: 30px; padding-right: 30px;">In Africa, there is often a systematic gap in public knowledge outside of Wikipedias, such as publicly-accessible documentation and recorded oral history. For most of Africa, history and culture has been systematically oppressed as part of colonial or postcolonial knowledge regimes (for more context, <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/African_historiography" target="_blank">see the Wikipedia article about African Historiography</a>). However this has been challenging for Sub-Saharan African communities: if the content doesn’t exist on the internet to begin with, the big Wikipedia language’s editorial practices make it hard to demonstrate Notability and Verifiability. This means that common knowledge topics that could create pageviews in a specific African context, often have not been documented on Wikipedia and most people who would need this knowledge, wouldn’t expect to find it on the internet. For example, the recent <a href="https://diff.wikimedia.org/2023/05/08/aid-project-for-a-living-tradition-what-we-learned-by-working-with-igbo-dance-communities-to-document-changing-traditions/" target="[object Object]">Audiovisuals of Igbo Dances (AID) project</a> was able to document dance traditions that otherwise were not on the internet. </p> <p style="padding-left: 30px; padding-right: 30px; text-align: center;"><img height="333" width="500" src="/static/image3.webp" alt="Two Igbo men dancing in green and read attire" /></p> <p style="padding-left: 30px; padding-right: 30px; text-align: center;"><em style="box-sizing: inherit; color: #202122; font-family: charter, serif; font-size: 13.125px;">An example of a previously undocumented dance tradition collected by the Igbo community. CC BY-SA 4.0 AID Project</em></p> <p style="padding-left: 30px; padding-right: 30px; text-align: left;">With these barriers in mind, identifying high impact content for Africa might require interpreting potential future audiences rather than our current pageviews. For example, even the topics that exist on the Wikis about Africa are often underdeveloped: on big language wikis like English or French Wikipedias, they were overwhelmingly written by editors from outside of Africa, frequently using non-African sources. When African readers arrive on Wikipedias but see content primarily written for European or North American audiences, readers are less likely to stick around and browse the content or learn how to edit.</p> <p style="padding-left: 30px; padding-right: 30px; text-align: left;">So even if content is already on Wikipedia (i.e. articles about major cities in Nigeria), this doesn’t mean that it serves the public in that context -- and thus it will likely not have very high pageviews, because the people most affected by the topic would not find the content useful. In turn, we have less clear signals of impact on both core African content articles and connected less popular articles that readers would find through clicking on links or Google searches. This can lead to a double bind for communities working on under-covered topics in both Africa and other contexts: both not existing on our platforms, and not showing impact signals when the content does exist.<br /><br />Some contexts also don't expect to find local language content on the internet, instead assuming the dominance of English or other colonial languages. For example, the Yoruba language community in Nigeria actively had to<a href="https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Recruit_readers_as_writers/Reports" target="[object Object]"> recruit contributors and advertise the wiki</a>, in order to build <a href="https://diff.wikimedia.org/2022/11/30/how-to-recruit-native-speakers-for-a-small-language-wikipedia-learning-from-the-yoruba-wikimedians-user-group-approach/" target="[object Object]">greater acceptance and community growth</a>.<br /><br /><img
