content"
Listbuilding creates collaboration

One of the biggest insights we have learned from campaign design in the Wikimedia movement is that: before organizers can recruit new audiences they need to educate their existing communities about the topics that these new audiences are interested in so that changes made by new editors can become part of the existing knowledge ecosystem.

By building a group of allies among existing community members, both editors and organizers, it is easier to both a) identify topics to work on for newcomers and b) make sure that contributions to the wikis are meaningful and long lasting.

For example, during the #WikiForHumanRights Campaign in 2023, we organized capacity building sessions focused explicitly on educating organizers about the topic gap and how to build topic lists related to the gap. And then, in the African community, regional organizers took this a step further, and created a study group: collaborative list-building sessions where they used Wikidata to examine Wikipedia’s and Wiktionary's content within that topic area in order to have effective local activities. See some of the results of the collaboration on this page.

This time and energy spent in learning about the topic and how to map it on Wikimedia projects, made it easier for local communities to build events that matched their own context and community’s interests while also collaborating across movement groups.

"
