All of the buildings are named after men, and it gets in the way of girls being inspired to participate in public life. When I learned that Wikimedia Argentina was running the Mujeres con Calle contest it excited me, because at the very least we could tell stories about the women in public spaces. But it doesn't go far enough, we need to also create content about women who aren't yet in public spaces, to inspire folks to change the situation.

The National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health in the United States has been organizing editathons and other Wikipedia activities over the last 5 years around the topics of workplace safety. As an organization, their mission is focused on helping workers in the United States have safe workplaces. By working on the topic, it both aligned with the organization’s goals, and helps them disseminate their research to the general public. However, they noticed that when they run events on the topics: not very many members of the public join, so they have decided to only focus on working with staff within NIOSH, instead of trying to do public events. For me, I am not very motivated by this topic, but I can see why that organization does what it does.

In my community, in West Bangal, we organize Wiki Loves Butterflies. Though the content has a very niche topic area: it's an important way to document biodiversity in a region with habitat loss and conservation challenges. The Organizers run photowalk with a very targeted group of participants: nature photographers. They have learned that retaining the existing community of wildlife photographers is important for sustaining the program.

"
