Libraries, archives, museums, the Wiki Education", "subtitle-119340-126660-24": "Program, right? That gives us content through academic institutions. Data donations", "subtitle-126930-133230-25": "these days with Wikidata, we may want data donations from bodies that have structured", "subtitle-133230-139200-26": "data. Two examples are the Kiwix", "subtitle-162600-168660-31": "product which is a set of software tools and services that provide offline", "subtitle-168660-176940-32": "access to Wikipedia knowledge, which is very important in places where Internet access is", "subtitle-176940-181920-33": "still not widely available and even the radio programs:", "subtitle-182070-188760-34": "We've had radio programs in Mexico, in Nigeria, where, literally, Wikipedians went on", "subtitle-188760-194610-35": "the air on a radio program and shared free knowledge, just shared free knowledge from", "subtitle-194610-201030-36": "Wikipedia on the air as an example of spreading knowledge, helping knowledge reach", "subtitle-201630-208940-37": "people with an obvious benefit to our mission. Access to sources, right?", "subtitle-209070-215640-38": "We partner with certain organizations in order to increase our editors' access to", "subtitle-215640-221100-39": "sources. For example, The Wikipedia Library, right? The Wikipedia Library, which", "subtitle-221100-228060-40": "partners with commercial academic publishers to give us free licences that editors can use", "subtitle-228060-234000-41": "to access paywalled resources so that they can cite things on Wikipedia.", "subtitle-234180-241050-42": "And by the way, what is the benefit to those publishers? Why do they agree to do that? Is", "subtitle-241050-250890-43": "there a benefit or is it just a donation out of the kindness of their heart? You can just", "subtitle-250890-256590-44": "unmute and answer if you have an answer. Oh, they provide access to show what's behind", "subtitle-256590-259730-45": "the paywall.", "subtitle-261170-266990-46": "They provide a way to show what's behind the paywall, right? It's a good way to increase", "subtitle-266990-270380-47": "awareness that these resources exist.", "subtitle-270380-276890-48": "People will run across them on Wikipedia. [someone] says \"citations increase. In the academic", "subtitle-276890-282470-49": "world, the more you are cited, the more valuable your material is, even if there's no", "subtitle-282470-289250-50": "money involved in the citation itself.\" People just want the citations, et cetera. So yes,", "subtitle-289250-293480-51": "that was just a quick parenthetical. There are benefits to the publishers. It's not just", "subtitle-293480-299630-52": "out of the kindness of their hearts. It is a partnership and so on and so forth. We can", "subtitle-299630-305210-53": "partner with groups and organizations to do better outreach in order to educate our", "subtitle-305210-309650-54": "readers, not even try to convert them to editors. Just teach people that Wikipedia", "subtitle-309650-315320-55": "exists, how to use it, how to navigate it, etc. We can do outreach in order to recruit", "subtitle-315320-321620-56": "editors, editing workshops, editathons, competitions of all kinds. We can partner", "subtitle-321620-326990-57": "with organizations to receive in-kind support.", "subtitle-327020-333110-58": "We just gave an example of how that might not be a partnership, right? When someone just", "subtitle-333110-338300-59": "gives us a venue or Wi-Fi or prizes without any benefit to themselves, then it's a", "subtitle-338300-345320-60": "donation. A donation \"in kind\", meaning not of money, but of stuff. But you can also have a", "subtitle-345320-350810-61": "partnership with an in-kind donation. As we've described the library partnership,", "subtitle-350810-354620-62": "where the library gives us the space. And maybe, I don't know, maybe they pay for", "subtitle-354620-359660-63": "the refreshments, but they get something from it. It's a partnership, not just a donation", "subtitle-359690-364580-64": "on their part. And there are legal partnerships, and there are communications", "subtitle-364580-369680-65": "partnerships where we might partner in order to deliver some message to the media, some", "subtitle-369680-376400-66": "joint announcement, syndication of content, et cetera, et cetera. And one last example is", "subtitle-376400-379940-67": "advocacy, FOP = freedom of panorama.", "subtitle-380120-386210-68": "We've had some successful examples in the movement of Wikipedians partnering with other", "subtitle-386210-392960-69": "non-profits and with legislators in order to promote the legislation of a freedom of", "subtitle-392960-398540-70": "panorama clause in countries where the Copyright Act did not grant Freedom of", "subtitle-398540-403190-71": "Panorama. And that's still an issue in many parts of the world. So again, these are", "subtitle-403190-408440-72": "just a few examples of the many kinds of partnerships specifically relevant to", "subtitle-408440-414680-73": "Wikimedia. Now, not all of these are relevant to you in your country, in your community, in", "subtitle-414680-421620-74": "your group. But I'm trying to give a panorama of the kinds of things that are possible. All", "subtitle-421620-428040-75": "of these are possible partnerships. Any questions so far about this kind of", "subtitle-428040-435510-76": "definition of partnership? If not, we will move on.", "subtitle-435540-440910-77": "What do legislators stand to benefit from partnering to advocate for Freedom of", "subtitle-440910-446220-78": "Panorama? That's an excellent question. What do legislators stand to benefit? So", "subtitle-446220-449970-79": "theoretically, Freedom of Panorama is this obscure copyright issue that the general", "subtitle-449970-454770-80": "public doesn't really know about or care about, and people violate copyright anyway.", "subtitle-455010-460560-81": "But if you think about it, if you are able to get a legislator interested in promoting", "subtitle-460560-467280-82": "Freedom of Panorama, it's a change to the law that doesn't cost the state anything.", "subtitle-467520-472110-83": "It's literally just changing the law. It doesn't require budgeting. It doesn't require", "subtitle-472380-477390-84": "difficult political maneuvers. And if you are able to make that change, then you, the", "subtitle-477390-483870-85": "legislator, the politician get to be the bringer of Freedom of Panorama to people. And", "subtitle-483870-488430-86": "again, with a little bit of good communication, you can treat it as an", "subtitle-488430-492810-87": "achievement. You can tell people, \"Hey, until now, technically you couldn't take a picture", "subtitle-492810-498300-88": "of this famous building that you all know; now you can!\" Now it's legal, right? That is", "subtitle-498300-502800-89": "a positive message that I think many politicians would love to be,", "subtitle-502800-508140-90": "signed underneath, especially when, again, they don't need to come up with a budget for", "subtitle-508140-512460-91": "it. They don't need to move mountains to make it happen. It's literally a simple change to", "subtitle-512460-519090-92": "the law. So that's an example of something that they may stand to benefit from helping", "subtitle-519090-524040-93": "legislate that. Another question here: \"What about commercial partnerships, especially in", "subtitle-524040-531390-94": "relation to Wikivoyage, with a tour operator or an airline?\" That is a very good question", "subtitle-531390-532980-95": "and a tricky one.", "subtitle-533010-538680-96": "Commercial partnerships are, of course, difficult for us as a non-profit and as", "subtitle-538680-544860-97": "a body that is committed to neutrality. And Wikivoyage in that sense is a bit of an", "subtitle-546300-552180-98": "unusual Wikimedia project in that it by its very nature, when it mentions three", "subtitle-552180-556230-99": "restaurants in the city, the fact that it mentions these three restaurants and not", "subtitle-556230-562650-100": "other restaurants is itself a little non neutral. So there's a whole", "subtitle-562770-569820-101": "mess of of neutrality issues around Wikivoyage that is fairly difficult to negotiate.", "subtitle-569820-576840-102": "But theoretically, yes, there could be some kind of very narrow overlap with a commercial", "subtitle-577650-585990-103": "tourism operator of some sort. For example, let's say we have the National Tourism Board", "subtitle-585990-590790-104": "in some country, and they're there. Their goal as the National Tourism Board is to", "subtitle-590790-596420-105": "increase tourism, to make sure as many tourist dollars [as possible] are spent in the country.", "subtitle-596430-602520-106": "They don't particularly care if it's at this hotel or that hotel and this attraction or", "subtitle-602520-606900-107": "that attraction, they just want more people to fly into the country and spend tourist", "subtitle-606900-611190-108": "dollars. So that's their broad goal. It is not quite a commercial goal. It's kind of a", "subtitle-611190-616980-109": "national economic goal, and that is a potential partner to the Wikimedia movement.", "subtitle-617250-623850-110": "If we can find again that narrow overlap where our interests match, and, again, we'll", "subtitle-623850-631130-111": "talk about [it] a little more in a future lesson. But just to even out this example:", "subtitle-631200-635790-112": "the National Tourism Board is very likely, for example, to have really high class", "subtitle-635790-641880-113": "photography of all kinds of amazing sights, as in sightseeing, right?", "subtitle-642120-648060-114": "Things to see in the country, like great professional photography of amazing nature", "subtitle-648060-653220-115": "and waterfalls and wild animals, and I don't know what, that they could release under a", "subtitle-653220-658170-116": "free license. Right. They're unlikely to if we don't ask, as Wikimedians. But if we tell", "subtitle-658170-664110-117": "them, \"Look, you want to promote tourism to your country, we don't have a lot of good", "subtitle-664110-669450-118": "media about the sites in your country. If you release these images under a free license, we", "subtitle-669450-673590-119": "can start illustrating articles with these amazing", "subtitle-673590-679350-120": "photographs and people can go, 'Oh wow, I had no idea such a thing exists in, say, Nigeria.", "subtitle-679680-687000-121": "Now I'm interested.'\" So that's an example of a narrow potential overlap that we could have", "subtitle-687000-692880-122": "with even a an organization that is absolutely not neutral point of view, right?", "subtitle-692920-697560-123": "An organization that is absolutely trying to convince you that this country is the best or", "subtitle-697560-702570-124": "that this site is is what you want to see. We can still negotiate some narrow thing that we", "subtitle-702570-708360-125": "can agree on, which would benefit both sides and which would preserve us as neutral."}
